HUNTERSVILLE, NC (Aug. 22, 2016) – Chase Purdy captured his first Southern Super Series top ten finish on Saturday night at Mobile International Speedway. The Mississippi native fought through various on-track issues over the course of 150 laps to record what was also his first top ten with David Gilliland Racing.
Purdy started the weekend off strong, practicing near or inside the top five during each session on Friday and Saturday. He followed up those practice laps with a top-five qualifying effort, clocking in fourth quickest during time trials. A series-mandated redraw placed the No. 97 car and Purdy seventh prior to the green flag.
Once the race began, Purdy held his ground inside the middle of the top ten, logging laps until the halfway break where the team was able to make adjustments and bolt two new tires onto the No. 97 Bama Buggies Toyota. Confident in his newly adjusted machine, Purdy set out to improve his position during the second half of the event.
As the race wore on, however, Purdy began to struggle with the balance of his racecar, fighting handling issues as the fuel burned off and the tires began to wear. Despite various battles behind the wheel, Purdy persevered to bring home his first super late model top ten finish, a 9th-place effort for him and his team.
“We struggled up off but for the most part we were pretty decent, we just needed more turn and drive off,” Purdy explained after the race. “At the competition caution, we made some changes to help with the short run speed, but in the second segment everyone got spread out. I ended up using my tires a little too much and definitely learned a lot. I’ll go home, study my notes and watch film for our next race. The DGR team did an awesome job on the car, getting it ready for this race.”
Purdy’s next super late model race will be with the highly competitive CARS Tour at Southern National Motorsports Park for the CSX Play it Safe 250 presented by MMIA on Saturday, September 3. The event will be broadcast LIVE on CARS Tour TV at www.carstour.tv.
