When Eddie Partridge and his wife, Connie along with Tom Gatz, bought Riverhead (L.I.) Raceway two years ago, he vowed to bring back some of the traditions that were evident when he was a fan on Long Island. Yet, I don’t think even he could have predicted what went down in the renewal of the ISLIP 300 at Riverhead this past Saturday night. The only one who did that was Track Announcer Bob Finan. More on that later.
For the first 100+ LAPS, Ryan Preece led the way in the #6 owned by the Partridges’. The battle for the top spot would also be joined at different points by past Champions Tom Rogers, Jr, John Fortin and past and current Track Modified Champion Shawn Solomito. While this was going on for the majority of the Race, 15-year-old Dillon Steuer waited patiently at midpack. When Rogers and Howie Brode tangled with about 20 left, Steuer came to the front and captured the first Tour Type Modified win of his career. As the only one to predict this possibility on FACEBOOK earlier in the day, I suggest that Bob Finan and wife, Lori, buy some LOTTO tickets this week.
DAVE BRIGATI PAID HOMAGE TO THE LATE FRED HARBACH, “THE FLYING DUTCHMAN ” BY
BRINGING BACK THE X90 FOR A NIGHT.
CONTINUING THE NOSTALGIC TONE OF THE NIGHT, PAST ISLIP SPEEDWAY AND RIVERHEAD TRACK CHAMPION DON HOWE WON THE VINTAGE RACE. DON WILL BE A GUEST ON HOT LAPS WITH STATS THIS WEEK.
While he didn’t fare well in the ISLIP 300, Dave Brigati is perfect in the Crate Modified Division in 2017. Each time, he had Cj Lehmann in the #74 VISCONTI MOTORSPORTS machine right on his tail. It goes without saying that the team would like to reverse the order before the season is over. Finally, Tim Mulqueen won the Blunderbust Feature.
In other action, at Wall (N.J.) Stadium, Andrew Krause won the Modified Feature, in the process denying Jimmy Blewett of an unblemished record.
Lastly, Ted Christopher leads the SK Modified Division by four points after 3 races at Stafford (Conn.) Speedway.
