Last Race Recap: In only his second career pro late model race, Matt scratched and clawed his way to a second place finish. After starting on the pole by virtue of an invert, Matt rode inside the top five for most of the race until a late-race accident eliminated the leaders and set the stage for a late race restart where Matt was on the front row. Learning from the veterans around him on the restart, Matt still finished second after a late-race sprint.
Time Off: Due to some quirks in the New Smyrna Speedway schedule, Matt and the No. 81 team are coming off the first of a few extended breaks between races. The track does not run pro late models as often during the summer due to the Florida heat and it has allowed Matt time to hone his racing craft by running karts around his home in Charlotte and getting up to speed on his new iRacing simulator rig.
Point Contender: After only a handful of point races at New Smyrna, Matt is currently fourth in track points on the strength of his two top-ten runs in his first two races. He will look to uphold his standing with another solid run this weekend.
Matt’s Thoughts: “I’ve been enjoying the warm weather around Charlotte and been racing some karts while watching lots of local racing to see what I can learn. I’m really looking forward to getting back in the car this weekend. We’re hoping to build off of the last race and run even closer to the front cars than we did before.”
