So hear we are just over the halfway mark of the regular season, and there are teams looking at their rosters and coaches trying to figure out what to do before the trade deadline. One of these teams is the Bruins, a team of certain quality but under performing this year. Some say it could be the roster, others believe its Claude Julien the bench boss of the Bruins. As of now the Bruins sit in 3rd place of the Atlantic division, the problem is that a lot of teams chasing and ahead have games in hand on the B’s. Ottawa is ahead by 3 points and has 5 games in hand on Boston, The Flyers, who sit in the 2nd wild card spot have the same amount of points as Boston has 2 games in hand and the Toronto Maple Leafs are 1 point back and have 6 games in hand.
This for the Bruins spells trouble, with them sinking as is now Julien is having to hit the drawing board to try and bring back that old team that made deep runs in the playoffs and made the Cup finals and won a Cup in Boston. Despite the Bruins ranking 2nd in shots per game, they can’t find the back of the net, which is not good when you have guys like Bergeron, Marchand, Pasternak, and Backes. Julien who was hired on June 21, 2007 he began a change which led to the team growing to something bigger. It only took four seasons for the Bruins to return to the Cup finals under Julien, winning in 7 games to the Vancouver Canucks in 2011, and going back to the finals in 2013 only to lose the Blackhawks in 6 games.
The game Sunday in Pittsburgh had promise with the !st period ending early with the remaining 6:28 being added to the 2nd period due a LARGE CHUNK of ice being repaired. The game was close till the actual 2nd period started, 18 seconds into the 2nd frame the Pens struck and then seemingly scoring at will from every where. Tuuka Rask left the game due to his issues with migraines.
Things have to shape up for the Bruins in many areas, I would like to see them crash the net more, especially with Milan Lucic not there anymore, and I would like to see more aggressive defensive play when holding a multi-goal lead. The power play scoring and even strength scoring has to come from someone other than rookie sensation David Pasternak, yes I know Marchand is leading in points with 45, but 28 of those are assists, and where has Patrice Bergeron been 10 goals and only 11 assists. There is no 20 goal scorer on their roster as of now, Pasternak is closest with 19 and no one has more than 14 points on the power play, which Torey Krug leads the team with 13 points. The power play is clicking at 16.9%, and if you can’t score with the man advantage, you won’t win games especially in the dog days of the season.
Coaching replacement rumors have been floating on during the past couple weeks, I believe that coaching isn’t the problem, it’s the production as of late. the Bruins can win, they are a strong team with good talent, with Julien skipping practice and taking the time to watch video of the positives and negatives of the team will hopefully bring back that spark the B’s are used to playing with. It would be really hard to replace a guy like Julien this late in the season with them holding a playoff spot as of now. If he can’t get it turned around and miss the playoffs, I’m afraid we won’t be back next year. If that happens, he won’t go long without a job. Maybe Vegas……………………………. who knows how this will play out. I’m looking for some angry B’s to be playing with chips on their shoulder!
