Ever since he won the British Open a couple of weeks ago, Jordan Speith was anticipating the moment of standing on the 18th green at Quail Run on Sunday, moments before wrapping up golf’s Grand Slam.

Speith was indeed right in that spot on Sunday,  but only to congratulate his good friend and 2017 PGA Champion Justin Thomas.

Speith’s Grand Slam celebration was put on hold as Thomas sank birdies on the back nine to vanquish five competitors, one by one. One of them was Hidecki Matsuyama,  who was attempting the equally daunting task of winning on back-to-back weekends.

Thomas ended up carding an 8-under par 276 for the Tournament,  good enough for a two-stroke victory.
