After three rounds of superb golf, Dustin Johnson and Kevin Chappell entered Sunday’s final round of the Tournament Players Championship tied, with equal shots to win the tournament and the FedEx Cup, emblematic of the PGA Annual Champion.
However, when he teed off on Sunday at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Rory McIlroy had other ideas. At the end of regulation play, McIlroy had charged from three shots back to force a playoff with Chappell and Ryan Moore. Johnson, who led for three rounds, faded to finish sixth.
Chappell missed a putt on his first playoff hole and was eliminated. From there, McIlroy and Moore fought it out, with the Irishman winning the tournament and the FedEx Cup.
The waiting game is still not over for the Americans, as Ryder Cup Captain Davis Love III now must pick one player to complete the roster for matches that begin next week.
Finally, while the calendar still has not flipped officially to 2017, the new season opens in three weeks with the SAFEWAY OPEN in Napa, California. Of course, all eyes will be on
Tiger Woods should he make his much anticipated return at that event.
